Bread Pudding

One of the oldest forms of food rescue — day-old bread saved by eggs, milk, and a little sweetness. Made weekly in many Amish homes to use up both stale bread and surplus eggs.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound day-old bread, torn into chunks (450g)
  • 6 eggs
  • 2 cups whole milk (470ml)
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream (120ml)
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon, 1 teaspoon vanilla

Method

  1. Whisk eggs, milk, cream, sugar, cinnamon, and vanilla together.
  2. Pour over the bread chunks in a greased 9×13 pan and let soak 30 minutes, pressing occasionally.
  3. Bake at 350°F for 40 to 45 minutes, until puffed and golden.
  4. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or a dusting of powdered sugar.

Day-old sourdough, French bread, or brioche all work beautifully — and it costs almost nothing.
