Golden Ginger Turmeric Morning Tonic

Turmeric’s active compound, curcumin, has been one of the most studied anti-inflammatory compounds in modern nutrition science — but traditional Amish and Ayurvedic herbalists were using it for centuries before the studies confirmed it. This tonic makes the earthy, slightly bitter root genuinely enjoyable first thing in the morning.

Ingredients (makes 1 serving, easily multiplied)

  • 1 teaspoon fresh grated turmeric (or 1/2 teaspoon dried)
  • 1 teaspoon fresh grated ginger
  • Juice of 1/2 lemon
  • 1 tablespoon raw honey
  • Pinch of black pepper
  • 1 cup warm water

Method

  1. Combine turmeric and ginger in a mug.
  2. Pour warm (not boiling) water over and let steep 5 minutes.
  3. Stir in lemon juice, honey, and black pepper.

The black pepper isn’t optional — piperine increases how much curcumin your body can actually absorb, by a significant margin. Best made fresh each morning.
